CMU and CU expand collaborative engineering degree program

A third engineering degree program has been added to an instructional partnership between Colorado Mesa University and the University of Colorado.

The electrical and computer engineering degree program will start with the fall semester. Students enrolled in the program will participate in courses offered on the CMU campus in Grand Junction and earn a bachelor’s degree from CU in Boulder.

The program adds to the mechanical and civil engineering degree programs already offered by CMU and CU.

The addition was announced as part of the grand opening celebration for Confluence Hall, a computer science and engineering building at CMU.

“The University of Colorado is thrilled to expand our present engineering partnership program with CMU,” said Bobby Braun, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU. “Adding electrical and computer engineering to our existing programs on the Western Slope will broaden the possibilities for future generations of engineers while building the state’s economic competitiveness. CU is proud to partner with CMU to grow access to engineering education across the state.”

CMU and CU launched the joint mechanical engineering degree program about 10 years ago and added a civil engineering program in 2016. Under the collaboration, CMU faculty lead instruction for the first two years and CU faculty the last two years. More than 400 students are enrolled the program.

Glen Gallegos, a former CMU trustee who now serves as a CU regent, praised the effort. “I am extremely excited at how far we have moved forward. The people who win are the students and the people of western Colorado.”
