Fund-raiser dares participants to brave the shave

An annual event raising funding for childhood cancer research is scheduled for June 23.

The St. Baldrick’s and Community Hospital head shaving event is set for 1 to 6 p.m. at Charlie Dwellington’s, 103 N. First St. in Grand Junction.

Participants have their heads shaved in solidarity with children and young adults fighting cancer while also raising donations to fund cancer research. The June 23 event will begin with Yeulin Willett, a former state representative who’s agreed to be the kickoff shavee.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises funds in all 50 states as well as 25 foreign countries to support cancer research. The foundation raised $40 million last year through head-shaving events and other fund-raisers. The event in Grand Junction has raised a total of nearly $350,000 in six years with the assistance of Community Hospital as title sponsor and the additional support of Rocky Mountain Health Plans and Alpine Bank.
