Lodging tax collections climb, too

A measure of local hotel and motel stays has increased for a third consecutive month.

According to a report from the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau for January, $61,014 in lodging taxes were collected. That’s a nearly 11 percent increase over the same month last year. Because lodging tax reports lag a month behind, January collections reflect hotel and motel stays in December.

Lodging tax collections have increased on a year-over-year basis for the past three months. But with six straight months of year-over-year declines in the first half of 2013, total collections for reports issued last year came in at $1.2 million, 1.3 percent less than the same span the year before.

For January, the VCB also reported a 10.5 percent increase in visitors counted at the Grand Junction Visitor Center and a nearly 65 percent increase inunique visits to the VCB website at www.visitgrandjunction.com.
