Lodging tax collections slip

A measure of local hotel and motel businesses has slipped following three straight months of increases.

According to a report from the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau for February, $59,053 in lodging taxes were collected. That’s almost 2.3 percent less than what was reported for the same month last year. Because lodging tax reports lag a month behind, February collections reflect hotel and motel stays in January.

Until the February report, lodging tax collections had increased on a year-over-year basis for three straight months.

For reports for the first two months of 2014, $120,067 in lodging taxes were collected. That’s 4 percent more than the same span in 2013.

For February, the VCB also reported a 6.1 percent decrease in the number of visits to the Grand Junction Visitor Center, but a 66.7 percent increase in the number of unique visits to the VCB website located at www.visitgrandjunction.com.
