Lodging taxes dip third straight month

Lodging tax collections have dropped for a third straight month, a reflection of decreased business for hotels and motels in Grand Junction.

According to the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau for February, $60,416 in lodging taxes were collected, 2.7 percent less than what was reported for February 2012.

Since lodging tax reports lag a month behind collections, the February report reflects hotel and motel stays in January.

The decline in the February report follows an 11.4 percent drop in January and 6.7 percent drop in December. Prior to December, lodging tax collections had increased on a year-over-year basis 16 consecutive months.

Lodging tax collections so far in 2013 total $115,429. That’s 7.1 percent less than what was reported for the same span in 2012.

The VCB report for February also reflected a 26.9 percent decline in the number of visitors counted at the Grand Junction Visitor Center, but a 9.1 increase in the number of unique online visits to the VCB website at www.visitgrandjunction.org.
