Name change fits mission: Visit Grand Junction

A city department has a new name that matches its mission of encouraging people to visit Grand Junction.

“Our new name is simple, straightforward and invites people to come here. It clearly translates what our mission is,” said Debbie Kovalik, executive director of Visit Grand Junction.

What was formerly the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau officially launched its new name in conjunction with a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new mobile visitor center downtown.

“Visit Grand Junction encompasses all aspects of the sales and marketing efforts that our office accomplishes on a daily basis,” Kovalik said. “From the couple visiting from Denver for the weekend or the international traveler visiting for a week, to family reunions, weddings and meetings to assisting events, our goal is to create a positive economic impact for the entire community by engaging visitors and encouraging them to visit Grand Junction.”

When the department was established in 1990, the term visitor and convention bureau was a common one for the industry, Kovalik said. These days, though, visitor and convention bureaus have changed their names to align with Internet addresses and social media handles, she said.
