Name change official: It’s Colorado Mesa University
It’s official: Mesa State College is now Colorado Mesa University.
A state law authorizing the change took effect Aug. 10. Staff, faculty and students at the university joined community members in celebrating the change the day before at a grand opening ceremony at Houston Hall, where a project expanded and renovated the first building on the main campus in Grand Junction.
Officials from Colorado Mesa University also unveiled new logos for CMU as well as Western Colorado Community College, a division of the university.
CMU also has launched a new Web site located at www.coloradomesa.edu. The new site includes a mega menu that allows users to quickly access a menu of links with related titles and subtitles. The site continues to feature audience-specific navigation with links of particular interest to students as well as faculty, staff, alumni and the community.
A redesigned athletics Web site located at www.CMUmavericks.com is scheduled to launch later in August.
The new name is expected to communicate a geographic location and brand identity that will help attract more out-of-state students, but also preserves the heritage of the Grand Junction-based institution.
An April 26 vote by trustees to change the name followed years of discussion about seeking university status for Mesa State. The change also follows a more recent process to gather comments from students, faculty and staff as well as alumni and others. That process included 30 focus groups, a telephone town hall with more than 3,000 alumni and two surveys. More than 80 percent of those responding to the first survey favored changing the college to a university to reflect the addition of graduate degree programs.
Tim Foster, president of Colorado Mesa University, said at the time of the trustees vote the combination of words used in the new name offers the best choice. “I strongly believe this new name will position our institution for future success while recognizing our strong history and commitment to excellence.”
