Community Hospital board to enter into formal discussions with Centura

The board of trustees overseeing Community Hospital in Grand Junction has entered into a formal agreement to discuss the possibility of joining a regional health care organization.

The board announced it’s signed a letter of intent to enter into exclusive discussions to join Centura Health, which operates 17 hospitals and other facilities in Colorado and Kansas. Any transaction is subject to the negotiation of a definitive agreement and applicable regulatory approval.

Sam Starritt, chairman of the Community Hospital Board, said the decision reflects a commitment to preserve and expand options for health care in the Grand Valley. “The board, all of whom are community members who care deeply about ensuring access to high quality care for the people of the Western Slope region of Colorado and Eastern Utah for generations to come, are excited about this unprecedented opportunity to partner with Centura Health to create an even stronger cornerstone of value, access and quality health care in our community.”

Chris Thomas, president and chief executive officer of Community Hospital, agreed. “We are honored and flattered that Centura Health has taken notice of our continued growth and success over the past several years and is expressly interested in partnering with Community Hospital and our medical staff. This is a unique opportunity that we have in front of us that could positively impact the delivery of health care in our region for decades to come.”

Peter Banko, president and CEO of Centura Health, said he was excited to enter into formal discussions about how Community Hospital and Centura can work together. “As a health care provider who is as mutually passionate about treating the whole patient, mind, body and spirit, we appreciate the opportunity to discuss becoming an integral part of their flourishing communities.”

Community Hospital opened a new, four-story building in 2016. The new facility, as well as other efforts, have enabled Community Hospital to add or expand services in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology and plastic surgery. Community Hospital joined with Western Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and Western Colorado Spine to form the Community Orthopedic Group.

Centura provides health care services in Colorado and Western Kansas with 17 hospitals, 13 affiliate hospitals and 21,000 health care professionals. Centura also operates physician practices and clinics, neighborhood health centers and two senior living facilities.
