Steve Casano has maintained lawns since he was a 12-year-old earning money mowing grass.
But over the course of more than 30 years, Casano said he’s never seen results quite like what he’s experienced since he launched a Grand Junction-based business offering a more natural approach to lawn and landscape care. In one case, grass barely covering alkaline soil developed into a thick lawn with a profusion of new growth.
“Everything I’ve seen has been amazing,” he said.
Casano introduces into the soil microbes and water soluble organic materials that a provide a “buffet” for them to eat. The end results of the process, he said, are lawns, shrubs and trees with more rapid and lush growth. Moreover, the plants thrive without the need for chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. And they require less water. “We actually improve the soil health,” he said.
That’s especially important in an area like the Grand Valley that presents a harsh growing environment with heavy clay soils with high alkaline and salt levels, he added.
Casano and his wife, Kimberly, operate SoilTek Organic Solutions and offer services in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah.
Steve Casano brings to the venture more than 30 years of experience in landscape maintenance and installation in working for other companies and running his own businesses.
SoilTek applies microbes and water-soluble compost to lawns and injects microbes and compost into the soil around shrubs and trees. With lawns, SoilTek also repeatedly aerates the ground to make sure applications penetrate deeply.
While multiple aerations and applications might be needed for the first two years, the process promotes a self-supporting environment that reduces the need for subsequent treatments, Casano said.
As microbes digest organic materials, they create soil conditions that nourish plants, Casano said. The process also can reduce high alkaline and salt levels.
Healthy lawns crowd out weeds. Healthy lawns, shrubs and tress also are less susceptible to problems associated with disease or insects, Casano said. That means herbicides and pesticides aren’t needed.
Moreover, lawns and landscapes grown in healthy soils require less water, he said — as much as 25 percent less water in the first year and 50 percent less water the second year.
While many homeowners and business owners have become frustrated because their yards look worse and worse every year, SoilTek creates conditions in which the appearance improves every year, Casano said.
In addition to residential and commercial lawns and landscapes, Casano hopes to offer his services for athletic fields, golf courses, parks and even commercial agricultural operations.
While the applications might cost more initially, the long-term savings far exceed the difference, he said. “It’s actually a no-brainer when you look at the whole process.”
