A worker’s compensation insurance provider has more than doubled the size of its Grand Junction office to offer more services to businesses in Western Colorado and more space for safety training.

Pinnacol Assurance moved into larger and newly renovated quarters at 744 Horizon Court in a building now named for the state-chartered insurance company.

With 5,000 square feet of space, the new location includes meeting rooms that will allow Pinnacol Assurance to expand safety training for its agents and policyholders. Pinnacol also has entered into a partnership with the Western Slope Safety Council to use the space for council meetings and training.

While Pinnacol Assurance has operated an office in Grand Junction since 1993, an expanded presence was needed, said Phil Kalin, president and chief executive officer. “For us, it was a very easy decision.”

Pinnacol Assurance provides worker’s compensation insurance to about 7,000 policyholders in Western Colorado, Kalin said. That’s about 90 percent of businesses in the region and nearly 13 percent of the businesses statewide to which Pinnacol provides coverage and other services.

Pinnacol also provides services to about 4,000 workers in Western Colorado who’ve been injured on the job, Kalin said.

The staff of the Grand Junction office has increased to 10 with the addition of a receptionist, business representative and safety consultant. A total of four safety consultants are now available to serve the Western Slope.

The nearly $600,000 in construction at the new location for Pinnacol Assurance included improvements to the fiber optic technology in the building, which will benefit Pinnacol as well as other tenants.

Meeting rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology will allow Pinnacol Assurance to expand safety training for its agents and policyholders.

The Western Slope Safety Council , a nonprofit group based in Parachute that promotes occupational safety in the oil and natural gas industry, also will use the space for meetings and safety training at no charge.

“That’s good for the community,” Kalin said.

Based in Denver, Pinnacol Assurance providers  workers’ compensation insurance to more than 55,000 businesses in Colorado, covering a total of about 1 million employees. According to company estimates, Pinnacol Assurance supports $364 million in economic activity in the state.

Pinnacol Assurance offers access to a network of more than 1,400 doctors, clinics, hospitals and other health care providers that treat work-related injuries.

The company also offers more than 35,000 hours of training a year  to help businesses maintain safer workplaces and manage risk.
