Firm marks 50 years in business with bloodmobile campaign

Tom Huerkamp wants to celebrate 50 years in business, but in a different way.

Rather than throw a party or host an open house, the owner of ProSpace Interiors has launched a campaign to raise $50,000 to help St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction purchase a new bloodmobile.

Huerkamp said the effort reflects a long tradition of giving back for what’s evolved over the years into an office and health care furniture business based in Delta. “It really speaks to who we are.”

ProSpace will match up to 20 percent of business and individual donations, he said.

Huerkamp said the campaign was launched in part because the St. Mary’s bloodmobile serves the same region as ProSpace in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. The mobile blood center housed in a 37-foot-long motor coach has completed more than 500 trips over the past 18 months in collecting blood from donors throughout the area.

But the bloodmobile is more than a decade old and traveled more than 200,000 miles, he said.

A former Army combat medic, Huerkamp said he’s long been involved in and supported hospitals and other health care providers in the region.

In a broader sense, ProSpace Interiors and its staff support a range of nonprofit organizations in the region, Huerkamp said. “Everyone of them does something to give back to the community, and I encourage it.”

Huerkamp and his late wife, Mary Lou, started what’s now ProSpace Interiors in November 1969 as a companion business to their newspaper operation in Cedaredge. They sold the newspaper in 1972 to concentrate on the business. What started out as a business machine and office supply firm evolved into Office Furniture & Design Centers and designing commercial office spaces and selling and installing furnishings.

Huerkamp rebranded the business as ProSpace Interiors in 2010.

ProSpace operates offices in Delta and a showroom in downtown Grand Junction. The company employ 14 employees, many of whom have worked for the firm for decades, Huerkamp said.

In addition to office spaces, ProSpace serves the health care industry and has provided furnishings for hospitals and clinics throughout Western Colorado. That includes Community Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and West Springs Hospital in Grand Junction as well as the Colorado Canyons Hospital and Medical Center in Fruita.

Huerkamp said he’s eager to celebrate 50 years in business, but also raise money for a new bloodmobile. “I’m really excited about it.”

To donate to the campaign to raise $50,000 for a new St. Mary’s bloodmobile, mail a check to St. Mary’s Foundation, P.O. Box 1628, Grand Junction, CO 81502 and include the notation “ProSpace 50th.
