CMU event to include documentary on fraud

Portions of a new documentary about one of the biggest municipal fraud cases in United States history will be shown as part of a free event at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.

The event is set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Meyer Ballroom at the University Center near 12th and Elm Streets.

The CMU Department of Business will show clips from the documentary as part of an ethical leadership town hall meeting conducted in conjunction with the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative. The initiative was established to strengthen the teaching of principle-based ethics. The CMU business department was awarded a Daniels Fund grant and joined the initiative in January.

The town hall also will be sponsored by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy Center for the Public Trust.

The documentary tells the story of Rita Crundwell, a former city controller in the small town of Dixon, Ill., whose embezzlement of $53 million went undetected for more than 20 years. The documentary will be used to spark discussion among business and accounting students and other audience members.
