Crescent Moon moves next door: Downtown spiritual-goods store gets 3 times the space, will expand offerings

Tamara Degler wants you to be able to come to her downtown Grand Junction store, Crescent Moon Spiritual Goods, and find like-minded people, find your tribe.

And then she really, really, really wants you to stand in the singing bowl from Nepal that is made with seven different metals. Or, as she and her employees like to call it, “the famous standing singing bowl.”

She’s been able to offer that in rather cramped quarters at 535 Main St. for close to four years, but she’s in the middle of moving to a new space that will afford a lot more elbow room and things to do for those tribe-seekers.

Best of all, she’s moving next door, 537 Main St., into the space that was occupied by Loki Gear until a few weeks ago. Moving doesn’t get much easier than that.

And the timing was incredible, as Degler was already looking – without much luck – for a new, larger space downtown when she encountered downtown-business-neighbor and Loki Gear owner Seth Anderson.

“I was walking by Seth three weeks ago,” Degler said, relating the story on May 6, “and he was like, ‘Yeah, we’re leaving.’ I’m like, ‘I hate to hear you’re going, BUT what are you doing to your space?’

“It worked out just perfect. If you’re gonna move, move next door. That way you don’t … traumatize your customer base. Because hopefully they can just look next door and see us.”

What people will see at 537 Main St. when Crescent Moon reopens is everything that was at the former location – crystals, stones, jewelry, evil eye, herbs, essential oils, tarot cards, oracle cards, singing bowls, incense, sage – plus some new items and more space that can be utilized for customer experiences (think: standing in the singing bowl).

That’s because the new location is – and Degler said this with great gusto – “Three times bigger!”

“We’ll add on more products, a few different things, but we’re also going to have room for readings,” she said. “We all do different kinds of energetic readings, we do aura photography, tarot readings, oracle card readings.”

Degler pointed to an area in the middle of the store and said it will be classroom space.

That was not possible previously, as Degler said of the former location, “It was crammed. I mean, there was a lot of stuff in there.”

Offering a lot of stuff is the goal, as Degler said, “Crescent Moon is a menagerie of different things for spirituality and tools. It’s really an experiential store, so we want people to come in and we want them to try things. We want them to play the singing bowls. We want them to feel the stones. That’s why we try to keep as much out as we possibly can, so that they can experience it.

“I bring in a little bit of everything to try to help whatever spiritual practice might be the thing that you’re doing and to help provide those tools for people. … We have a lot of different things that you just don’t find everywhere, like dowsing rods. The evil eyes, those are really popular. Just the different crystals that we have, too. Incense, we have all different kinds of incense.

We probably have the largest sage selection, I bet, this side of the Rockies. So we have about 50 different varieties that we provide.”

On second thought, she said, don’t claim she has the largest sage selection, because she doesn’t know that for certain. But the point is: She carries a lot of sage!

The larger store comes with a pricier lease, but Degler foresees revenues increasing enough to make that a non-issue.

“I mean, there’s so many more things that I can do that will help to generate income for the business that it just makes complete and total sense to do it,” she said.

She also can now present to Grand Junction the store she’s wanted to provide all along.

“What we really want to become is that place where people in the community can gather who are like-minded, think a little differently, but who really want to find their people, find their tribe.”

Then, once you’re at the store, you might as well check out that standing singing bowl.

“That’s one of the things that’s a customer favorite,” Degler said. “And it’s something that I actually experienced about five years ago at a conference I went to, and I was like, ‘You know, I got to have this for my customers, because it’s so cool.’

“I don’t care if they buy anything or not. I just want people to experience it. It’s just a cool vibration, and people tell you they’ll vibe the rest of the day.”

Crescent Moon employee Will Heckard added, “If you’re looking for some good vibes, we’re the place. And if you’ve never stood in a giant bowl to just make yourself feel good, come on down to Crescent Moon, because it can happen here.”

Crescent Moon Spiritual Goods will have its grand reopening June 7 at its new location: 537 Main St. in downtown Grand Junction.
