Highway 6 open house previews safety improvements

The Colorado Department of Transportation is inviting the public to a Jan. 14 open house to review planned safety and traffic improvements along U.S. Highway 6 in Palisade.

The open house will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Palisade Recreation Center gymnasium and is intended to give residents, business owners and commuters an opportunity to review designs, ask questions and provide input ahead of construction.

The project focuses on approximately one mile of Highway 6 between Rupp Avenue and Iowa Avenue. Planned upgrades include reconstructing the Elberta Avenue intersection into a roundabout. Elberta Avenue functions as the primary connection between the Town of Palisade and Interstate 70’s Exit 42 and reconfigures the Iowa Avenue intersection.

According to CDOT’s project overview, the work also includes new sidewalks to improve pedestrian connectivity, modifications to frontage roads to enhance safety for drivers and cyclists, and upgrades to drainage, water-quality features, pavement markings and signage.

Construction is scheduled to begin Jan. 19 and is expected to continue through October 2026, according to a CDOT news release. CDOT said feedback gathered during the open house will help inform final design details and construction planning as the project moves forward.
