Members of the dietary team at Family Health West in Fruita won the people’s choice award at benefit event featuring fine desserts.

Family Health West won the award at A La Mode, a fund-raiser staged by the Horizon Rotary Club at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Grand Junction. The event featured desserts prepared by local chefs.

“We entered because our patients and staff are always commenting on how wonderful the food is here,” said Kay Garcia, dietary director for Family Health West. “We created two desserts, a delicious S’more-like cookie with homemade meringue on top and one we call birthday party in a glass — shot glass, that is.” 

Sef Apodaca, catering supervisor at Family Health West, said the team enjoyed the challenge and the results. “It was so fun to see the guests’ faces as we torched the meringue in front of their eyes. Our creation was not just a feast for the mouth, but for the eyes as well.” 

Kay said members of the dietary team take their jobs seriously. “We make great food. But our team knows that food is much more than nutrition. It’s an experience, and we are committed to creating the best experience we can.”
