A building materials company with operations across the company has acquired a 55-year-old family owned paving and asphalt business based in Grand Junction.
Summit Materials announced it has acquired Elam Construction. The move follows the retirement of Harold Elam, the previous owner of Elam Construction.
Based in Washington, D.C., Summit Materials was formed in 2009 to acquire and grow companies in the aggregate, asphalt paving, cement, construction and ready mix concrete industries. Summit Materials operates companies in Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas and Utah.
Elam Construction was founded in 1956 by Bob and Mildred Elam.
In addition to its facilities in Grand Junction, Elam Construction operated offices in Aspen, Craig, Durango, Edwards and Pagosa Springs. During the peak season, the company employed more than 200 people.
In addition to business operations, Elam Constructon and Harold Elam also were well known for their support of community organizations and events.
