Businesses plan fund-raisers for animal shelter

Two Grand Valley businesses have scheduled events to raise money for the Roice-Hurst Humane Society.

Chow Down Pet Supplies has scheduled what it calls a “Howl-O-Ween” pet costume contest for Oct. 29.

The Hot Tomato Cafe & Pizzeria has scheduled its “Paws and Pies” fund-raiser for Nov. 5.

The Chow Down Pet Supplies event is set for 2 p.m. in front of its Redlands location at 2500 Broadway, Unit H.

The cost is $10 per pet, with all proceeds going to the Roice-Hurst Humane Society. Participants may register at Chow Down locations in Grand Junction and Fruita at 225 E. Aspen Ave. For more information, call 243-6200.

Chow Down will award three gift cards to the best-dressed pets: $250 for first, $100 for second and $50 for third.

In addition to the contest, Roice-Hurst will bring adoptable dogs to the Redlands store from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The “Paws and Pies” fund-raiser is set for 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hot Tomato, located at 124 N. Mulberry St. in Fruita. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of sales to Roice-Hurst. For more information, call 858-1117 or visit

Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Roice-Hurst will offer merchandise for sale and information — as well as bring adoptable dogs to the event.

The Chow Down location in Fruita will offer goodie bags for dog and cat owners and conduct a drawing for a one-year supply of dog food and gift baskets.
