A newly constructed shooting complex east of Grand Junction hailed by one official as a “world-class facility” has opened to the public.
The Cameo Shooting and Education Complex offers a venue in which firearms enthusiasts and hunters can shoot handguns, rifles and bows.
“We are making every effort to make the complex as high-quality as possible. And when folks see it for themselves, I have no doubt they will agree it’s a world-class facility,” said J.T. Romatzke, manager of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife northwest region.
Starting in November, a $12 daily use fee will be charged. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission set the fee based on what similar facilities offering comparable amenities charge.
“The public’s fees will support a range that features some of the finest shooting benches you will ever see, high-quality roof structures, lighting throughout the property, a trained staff on site, incredible picnic pavilions, bathrooms, extensive parking, potable water, a range office and pro shop, wifi connectivity, ranges from 25 to 200 yards to start with, and to top it off, great scenery — and we are just getting started,” Romatzke said.
Walt Proulx, manager of the complex, said plans for the nearly 2,000-acre property, including multiple 1,000-yard ranges, a fishing pond, classrooms, sporting clays, a three-dimensional archery range and terrain-based shooting.
The complex recently hosted the International Defensive Pistol Association 2018 Colorado State Championship.
“I’ve been hearing a lot of compliments from the competitors, many that went to their home states and talked this range up to their friends and family,” Proulx said. “Now the public will finally be able to experience for themselves what the fuss is all about.”
Romatze said visitors to the range can bring their own approved targets or use a variety of provided steel targets. Range users should read and follow all directions posted on signs throughout the complex and ask range safety officers for assistance if they need it.
The range is open from 10 a.m. until an hour before sunset Wednesday through Sunday. The range office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, visit www.cpw.state.co.us/cameo or call 464-1339.
