A man who’s served in a variety of positions with the City of Grand Junction has been appointed director of the newly created general services department.
Jay Valentine will oversee a department responsible for a range of functions, including business management, cross-departmental projects, facility maintenance, fleet operations, and procurement. Valentine had most recently served as deputy director of finance.
Grand Junction City Manager Greg Caton said Valentine already has been responsible for most of those functions.
“The breadth of all Jay’s responsibilities made it clear to me that collectively this was too big to put under the umbrella of the finance department and that a new department was warranted,” Caton said. “Jay has certainly proven his worth and his competence over his many years of service with the city, so this was a very logical decision,” Caton added. “I am confident he will do a great job and that these areas will achieve operational excellence under his leadership and management.”
Valentine joined the city in 1999 as an accountant analyst. He’s since served as accounting supervisor, purchasing and fleet manager, assistant financial operations manager and internal services manager.
Valentine earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Northern Colorado and a master’s of public administration degree from the University of Colorado. He holds certification as a public funds investment manager and government investment professional.
