Valley Surgical, Aesthetics & Vein Care in Grand Junction has scheduled a free skin cancer screening event.
The event is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at 2478 Patterson Road, Suite 4. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. For an appointment or more information, call 773-1946.
“Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and melanoma is the deadliest form of the disease. It’s vital that melanoma is treated early, because later stage treatments are not normally effective,” said Dr. Brad Case, owner of Valley Surgical, Aesthetics & Vein Care.
The free screening event is part of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May, an observance designed to raise awareness about skin cancer, early detection, treatments, and prevention.
“We live at 5,000 feet above sea level, and that means sun exposure is more intense here. This underscores the importance of wearing protective clothing and using a good sunscreen regularly. Preventing skin cancer is the best cure,” Case said.
Besides avoiding ultraviolet rays, Case said there are several ways to prevent skin cancer: use plenty of protection when exposed to the sun, see a doctor yearly to have your skin checked, do a self-exam regularly to ensure moles aren’t changing in color and shape and use aesthetic treatments.
