Family Health West is celebrating 70 years of operation as a health care organization in the Fruita area.
The Fruita City Council declared July 6 as Family Health West Day.
What was then known as the Fruita Community Hospital Association opened a 20-bed hospital on July 3, 1946. The hospital expanded in 1951 with the assistance of local farmers and ranchers who drove a convoy of trucks to Utah to bring back bricks for the project.
In the early 1980s, Family Health West began offering a broader range of health care services, focusing on care for seniors. The organization built a 120-bed nursing home and later build three more senior housing facilities in Independence Village, the Oaks and Willows.
Today, Family Health West also operates the Colorado Canyons Hospital and Medical Center in Fruita and provides a range of health care services through the hospital and outpatient clinics.
