An annual fund-raising event that dares participants to brave the shave is scheduled for June 22 at the Avalon Theater in downtown Grand Junction.
Men, women and children who volunteer for the St. Baldrick’s Grand Valley and Community Hospital head shaving event will raise money and awareness for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and childhood cancer research.
Community Hospital has returned as title sponsor of the event.
“We are incredibly proud to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation,” said Chris Thomas, president and chief executive officer of Community Hospital. “Childhood cancer has impacted so many in our community. We are honored to help make a difference in the lives of children who are battling cancer.”
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises funds in all 50 states as well as 25 foreign countries to support cancer research. The foundation raised $37 million last year through head-shaving events and other fund-raisers. The event in Grand Junction has raised a total of nearly $400,000 in seven years. The goal for 2019 is to raise $75,000.
In addition to raising money, participants also demonstrate their solidarity with children and young adults who lose their hair during cancer treatments.
The upcoming event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The event also will include a silent auction. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
