The Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce recently hosted officials from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor for separate meetings designed to connect government leaders with Western Colorado businesses.

The Chamber said the visits gave state and federal officials an opportunity to hear firsthand how public policy, energy regulation and workforce initiatives affect employers throughout the region.

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission meeting brought together business leaders, elected officials and utility representatives to discuss affordability, reliability and the cumulative impact of public policy on employers, workers and households across the Western Slope. 

The PUC is the state agency that regulates investor-owned utilities, including Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy. Commissioners, who are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Colorado Senate, make decisions on utility rates, major infrastructure projects and other regulatory matters.

According to the Grand Junction Chamber, participants examined how regulatory and legislative decisions collectively influence the cost of doing business and the region’s economic competitiveness.

The U.S. Department of Labor visit included tours of Innovative Textiles and Enstrom Candies, where officials learned about workforce development, manufacturing innovation and employee training. Company leaders highlighted investments in technology, transferable skills and employee development that have supported business growth while creating opportunities for workers.

Candace Carnahan, executive director of the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce, said hosting meetings like these is an important part of the Chamber’s advocacy efforts, because they give state and federal officials the opportunity to hear directly from the businesses affected by the policies they help shape.

The chamber said bringing decision makers to the Western Slope in meetings like these helps ensure local employers have a voice in discussions that affect the regional economy while strengthening communication between government leaders and the business community.
