Hardware store giving away compostable paper bags

The Clifton Ace Hardware is giving away compostable paper bags while supplies last as part of an effort to keep leaves and other yard waste out of the Mesa County landfill.

Clifton Ace Hardware offers a free five-pack of 30-gallon compostable paper bags. Coupons for the bags are available online from the Web site at www.cliftonace.com.

“We have lived and worked on the Western Slope for more than four decades, and the beauty of our surroundings impresses us daily. By providing free compostable paper yard waste bags to our neighbors, we’re doing our part to preserve the beauty we all love and enjoy,” said Vicki Peterson, owner of Ace Hardware stores in Clifton as well as Aspen and Carbondale.

Cameron Garcia, director of the Mesa County solid waste management department, said keeping yard waste out of the landfill reduces the production of methane gas. Moreover, yard waste can be used at the organic materials composting facility near the landfill to make compost that’s beneficial to farms, gardens and parks. Yard waste put into paper bags can be added to the compost pile with no added effort.

The composting facility is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and accepts leaves, yard wastes and other compostable materials for free.
