A journalist who has reported on health care systems around the world, including Mesa County, is scheduled to speak at an upcoming presentation in Grand Junction.

T.R. Reid’s presentation, titled “A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper and Fairer Health Care” is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Avalon Theater. The doors will open at 6:15 p.m.

The World Affairs Council of Western Colorado will host the event, which will be free to members and students. Admission for others will be $10.

Reid’s talk will be based on his documentary for the Public Broadcasting Service titled “Sick Around the World” and his book “The Healing of America.”

In another PBS film titled “US. Health Care: The Good News,” Reid visited areas around the nation that provide health care at costs below the national average. One of those areas was Mesa County, where Reid talked with doctors, hospital managers, insurance executives and patients about the local health care system.

Reid has made documentary films for PBS as well as National Geographic Television and the A&E Network.

He covered Congress and four presidential campaigns for the Washington Post and served as bureau chief for the newspaper in Tokyo and London. He also has written nine books in English and three in Japanese. His commentaries have been broadcast on National Public Radio.

In addition, Reid belongs to the board of the Health Research and Education Trust and serves as chairman of the Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care, a statewide citizen campaign to provide health care for every resident.
