Kentucky Derby benefit planned

A benefit Kentucky Derby viewing party in Grand Junction will raise money for programs that help children facing developmental challenges.

The event is set for 2 to 5 p.m. May 7 at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens, 641 Struthers Ave.

In addition to watching the Kentucky Derby on large-screen televisions, participants can join in race betting, a silent art auction and corn hole contests.

Ladies are invited to wear summer sun dresses and derby hats, while men can wear their linen or seersucker suits.

The Cowboy and the Rose will cater the event and serve hors d’oeurves and libations, including wine, beer and mint juleps.

Tickets sell for $35. A bouquet of a dozen dozens also is available for $420. Tickets are available for purchase online at the Web site at www.strivecolorado.org.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Strive, a Mesa County organization that for more than 50 years has provided services to help children and adults with developmental challenges. The benefit will serve as a fund-raiser for children’s programs.
