Kiwanis Club honors member for his efforts

Rick Nisley

A sales representative for a solar energy company has earned recognition for his contributions to the Grand Junction Kiwanis Club.

Rick Nisley was named Kiwanian of the Year for 2019 for his work as a club website manager and photographer as well as his other activities.

“I feel there isn’t anything Kiwanis is involved in that he isn’t involved in,” said Cori Elam, president of the club.

Nisley works as a sales representative for Atlasta Solar, a Grand Junction-based firm that sells, installs and services solar systems in Western Colorado.

His duties with the Kiwanis Club also keep him busy.

Nisley launched the club website. “I enjoy keeping that up to date. We moved the directory to make that online, too.”

Nisley takes photos of club activities and the club’s students of the month and scholarship winners. He’s become well known among club members for his presentation of photos he takes during an annual benefit pancake breakfast.

Nisley long has been involved with the Kiwanis Aktion Club, a group for adults with disabilities. “Action Club gives me the real good feelings,” he said.

Nisley served as Kiwanis Club president for the 2003-2004 fiscal year and strived, he said, to make sure members had fun while serving the community. “My goal was for people to leave with smiles on their faces.”

Participation in the Kiwanis Club is something of a family tradition for Nisley. His father, Bryant “Doc” Nisley, was a veterinarian and long-time member.

Recruiting new members is as important now as it was when his father served in the club, Nisley said. “I don’t think it will grow to the size it once was. But I went through the list a couple of years ago, and I saw that more than a third of our membership had joined in the past two years. And I’ve always been proud that our club is large enough so that we don’t have to ask people to serve as president a second time.”
