Luis Benitez, the first ever director of the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, is scheduled to lead a presentation at an upcoming event hosted by the Western Colorado Latino Chamber of Commerce.
The event is set for 11:30 am. Sept. 25 at the Redlands Mesa Clubhouse, located at 2325 W. Ridges Blvd. in Grand Junction. The event is open to the public. Tickets, which also include a buffet lunch, sell for $25 and are available online from EventBrite.
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper appointed Benitez in 2015 to lead the new state office and coordinate efforts to grow the outdoor recreation industry,
Benitez brings to the role a variety of experiences in the outdoor recreation industry. A former mountaineer and guide, Benitez has scaled some of the highest summits in the world — including six expeditions to the top of Mount Everest, the highest summit of all at more than 29,000 feet.
Benitez also worked for Vail Resorts in talent management and leadership development, operated a consulting group and served as director of Outward Bound Professional for the Colorado Outward Bound School. In addition, Benitez served on the Eagle Town Council and was involved in efforts to extend mountain bike and commuter trail systems as well as develop a whitewater park.
