Lodging tax collections in Grand Junction have resumed a downward trend, but still could top last year.
According to the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau report for September, $135,317 in lodging taxes were collected. That’s about $6,000, or 4.3 percent, less than what was reported for the same month last year.
Since lodging tax reports lag a month behind collections, the September report reflects hotel and motel stays in August.
Lodging tax collections increased on a year-over-year basis in the July and August reports, but declined for seven straight months before that.
For reports covering the first three quarters of 2013, a total of $899,036 in lodging taxes were collected. That’s about $15,000, or 1.7 percent, less than the same span in 2012.
The VCB reported a 13.4 percent decrease in visitors counted at the Grand Junction visitor center through the third quarter of 2013, but a 49.4 percent increase in unique visits to the VCB website at www.visitgrandjunction.com.
