Veterinarians at a Grand Junction animal hospital are looking for losers — as in pets that need to loose weight.
The pets that fare best in a weight-loss competition conducted by the Tiara Rado Animal Hospital will end up winners in more ways than one.
“We want to see the pets of the Grand Valley take back their health,” said Bob Marquis, owner of Tiara Rado Animal Hospital. “The New Year is the perfect time to start this contest since many pet owners are looking at their own health and eating habits.”
To participate in the contest, owners must make January appointments for their pets at Tiara Rado Animal Hospital for initial exams and weigh ins. Veterinarians will prescribe a weight-loss regimen that best fits the pet, its breed and body type. The competition will end with final weigh ins during April, 13 weeks after the initial exam.
“Before beginning any pet weight-loss regimen, it’s important to check with your vet,” Marquis said. “We are asking our participants to have an exam first because weight gain can be attributed to more serious medical conditions.”
Winners of the “Biggest Loser: Pet Edition” will be announced by May 5 and receive a gift certificate worth $100 that can be used for services and products from Tiara Rado Animal Hospital.
The public can keep up with participants through Facebook at www.facebook.com/trahospital. Before and after photos will be posted and pet owners will be able to post updates and questions.
