Mesa State team second in construction contest

A team of five Mesa State College students placed second in annual construction management competition.

The team was comprised of Brady Blackmer, Jamielee Cucuiat, Oliver Gard, Brett Kmetz and John Savage. The five are enrolled in the construction management program at Mesa State in Grand Junction.

The competition offers an opportunity for construction management students to apply what they learn to projects provided by construction companies. Students competing in the event had to prepare a complete construction management proposal for a 160,000 square foot addition to a college science building. The students had to review more than 800 pages of plans and a 3-inch stack of contract documents.

The proposal had to include an estimate, methodology and analysis of plans and regulations. The students completed a formal written proposal as well as made an oral presentation at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Industry judges reviewed the proposals and asked questions about scheduling, construction methods and other issues.

The Mesa State team receives support from industry fund-raisers, including a recent “topping out” party, as well as donations.
