Mineral lease district awards grants

The Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District has awarded more than $300,000 in grants.

A district awarded a traditional grant of $135,064 to the Clifton Fire Department for its fire station.

Three mini grants of $50,000 each were awarded to the Grand Junction Fire Department for a hazardous chemicals identifier, Town of Collbran for a patrol vehicle and Town of DeBeque for Stewart Avenue improvements.

A fourth mini grant of $18,662 was awarded to the Caprock Academy in Grand Junction for classroom door locks.

Established in 2011, the  Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District distributes federal mineral leasing funds to local public entities to support infrastructure, construction and public service projects that address the effects of energy development in the area. Grants are available under a traditional program to support large-scale public works and capital projects. The mini grant program awards up to $50,000 to fund smaller projects.

The competitive evaluation process for grants includes such criteria as the ability to address the effects of energy extraction, long-term value and sustainability.

Grant applications and additional information are available from the district website at www.mesaFML.org.
