A Montrose veterinary clinic stocks fresh blood for emergency treatments for dogs in Western Colorado.
San Juan Veterinary Clinic makes fresh blood available to veterinary practices from the only canine blood bank in the region. Advances in veterinary care have increased the demand for blood and blood banking services, said Chris Franklin, owner of the clinic.
Franklin encouraged dog owners to determine the blood type of their pets during routine exams in case a transfusion is ever subsequently required.
Canine blood donors are checked for blood type, fully vaccinated and tested to make sure they’re healthy and free of diseases. Blood requires special handling and storage to remain sterile and usable. Once collected, blood keeps for 30 to 35 days.
“We augment the supply from families who join our group of awesome canine donors,” Franklin said. “Blood collection is similar to humans. Except rather than an orange juice and cookie snack, we reward canine donors with canned dog food and lots of attention.”
