Movie program expanded to also include shopping

A program offering free movie tickets has expanded to include not only those dining in downtown Grand Junction, but also shopping there.

People who dine or shop any time on Tuesdays can bring their receipts to the box office at the Avalon Theater located at 645 Main St. to receive free tickets to the movies presented that night. Every $5 spent downtown is good for a free ticket. Receipts must be dated the same day as the movie.

“It’s a priority for us to support the local business community,” said Maria Rainsdon, general manager of the Avalon Theater, Two Rivers Convention Center and Las Colonias amphitheater for Pinnacle Venue Services. “Our events are bringing people downtown, and this program is just one way we can help drive folks to local businesses and help with economic impact.”

In 2016, more than $131,000 in receipts from downtown restaurants were collected in exchange for movie tickets. So far in 2017, more than $80,000 in receipts have been collected.
