Even as procedures become more popular and commonplace, the stigma and secrecy that once surrounded plastic surgery has substantially decreased.
“Plastic surgery doesn’t have the stigma it used to. Most people still want to keep the fact that they’re having a procedure quiet. But the idea of having plastic surgery has become more acceptable than ever before,” said Dr. Matthew Swelstad, a surgeon at the ReGenesis Plastic Surgery and Skin Care Center in Grand Junction.
Popular culture — including the openness of many Hollywood celebrities to discuss their procures and such television programs as “Extreme Makeover” and “Bridalplasty” — has made plastic surgery seem more attainable, Swelstad said.
But there’s also a downside, he added. “I don’t think this is the right way to approach plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is a serious procedure with possible complications and recovery time that’s never shown on these programs. The patient also needs to thoughtfully consider the procedure and the reasons why they want plastic surgery.”
Swelstad said a number of procedures are gaining popularity in the Grand Valley, including breast augmentations and “mommy makeovers” — a combination of a tummy tuck and breast augmentation or lift.
“Mommy makeovers are very popular with women after they’re done having children and want their pre-baby body back,” he said.
Regardless of the procedure, Swelstad said it’s important that patients considering plastic surgery be certain about their motivation.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re considering plastic surgery,” he said. “You need to be completely sure of your decision before undergoing any surgical procedure.”
Swelstad and Dr. Duane Hartshorn offer a range of plastic surgery services, including reconstructive surgery, to clients in Western Colorado and Utah. Swelstad and Hartshorn have practiced together in since 2007
