Valley Surgical, Aesthetics and Vein Care in Grand Junction has scheduled a free skin cancer screening as part of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 28 at 2478 Patterson Road, Suite 4. Since space is limited, appointments are required. For an appointment or more information, call 773-1946.
Brad Case, a doctor who opened Valley Surgical, Aesthetics and Vein Care, said skin cancer screenings are especially important in Western Colorado because residents tend to lead active, outdoor lifestyles that expose them to damaging ultraviolet radiation. “Plus, we live at 5,000 feet above sea level, and that means sun exposure is more intense here. This underscores the importance of wearing protective clothing and using a good sunscreen regularly. Preventing skin cancer is the best cure,” Case said.
Treatment for skin cancer is available, but diagnosis is the first step, Case said. In addition to screenings, any suspicious skin lesion should be biopsied and the tissue sent for analysis.
“Many aesthetic treatments that we offer like laser rejuvenation, chemical peels and microdermabrasion can help prevent skin cancer before it starts. These are also great anti-aging treatments to reverse sun damage and reduce lines and wrinkles,” he said.
