The Alpine Bank Junior College Baseball World Series in Grand Junction is among the sports events honored in a national publication.
JUCO was named an Award-Winning Event to Watch by SportsEvents Magazine, an industry publication produced by the SportsEvents Media Group. JUCO is featured in the awards and recognitions issue produced in January.
The Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission nominated JUCO for the award and promoting voting in December that determined the award winners. JUCO was among nearly 30 nominated events. Only 11 were named events to watch.
“We are humbled to receive the award as a 2017 sports event to watch in America,” said Jamie Hamilton, JUCO tournament chairman. “Our community has known how special the JUCO tournament is. But with the assistance of the Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission, our volunteers and fans are getting the national recognition they so richly deserve.”
John Rezell, executive director of SportsEvents Media Group, said SportsEvents Magazine readers came out in force to nominate and then vote for their favorite sports events and destinations and the host organizations that represent them. “Our team is proud to honor the nominees that received the most votes with a 2017 Readers’ Choice Award.”
Grand Junction has hosted the Junior College Baseball World Series for nearly 60 years. The National Junior College Athletic Association renewed its agreement to keep JUCO in Grand Junction through at least 2035.
The Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission — a collaborative effort of Colorado Mesa University, Mesa County, the cities of Grand Junction and Fruita and town of Palisade — promotes sports events that contribute to the Grand Valley economy.
