REI Co-op plans a grand opening celebration for its new and larger location in Grand Junction.
The celebration is scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3 at the store at 925 Independent Ave.
Starting at 8 a.m. both days, a party in the parking lot will offer free breakfast, music and games. Vendors will offer demonstrations and giveaways.
The first 250 people ages 18 and over through the doors both days will receive limited-edition water bottles with $10, $50 or $100 REI gift cards inside. The doors will open at 10 a.m.
REI moved in February from a location near North Avenue and Seventh Street to the location on Independent Avenue. At 23,000 square feet, the new space is twice as large as the previous space and has been remodeled.
“The larger space will further support the outdoor community in Grand Junction,” said Anna Ransdell, store manager. “In addition to offering a wider selection of quality outdoor gear, we’ve also added new offerings like bikes and kids’ clothing and footwear.”
A full-service bike shop offers repairs, maintenance and mountain bike rentals. REI also offers beginner to advance-level workshops and classes in a range of outdoor activities.
The staff was expanded by 15 to 45, Ransdell said.
Headquartered near Seattle, REI operates a total of 153 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia, including nine stores in Colorado. REI also operates the largest consumer co-op in the nation with more than 17 million members, about 1 million of them in Colorado. REI gives back to the community and in Western Colorado has supported the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail and Colorado Canyons associations.
