Dr. Gina Martin, a physician enrolled in the family medicine residency program at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, has been named the 2014 F. William Barrows Resident of the Year.
The Colorado Academy of Family Physicians presents the award to a resident who serves as a role model in demonstrating clinical, academic and teaching excellence as well as dedication to patients, colleagues and the community.
Martin expects to graduate this summer from the three-year residency program at St. Mary’s and practice family medicine in Delta.
During her residency, Martin took a special interest in developing surgical obstetric skills and experience and played a leadership role with a prental group for Spanish-speaking parents-to-be. Martin also served as president of the Mesa County Medical Society, the first resident ever elected to that office.
Martin received her medical degree from the Oregon Health & Science University and her undergraduate degree from Oregon State University.
The St. Mary’s Family Residency Program trains 24 physicians at a time, preparing them to provide care in small towns and rural areas. Of the 205 physicians who’ve completed the program since 1977, 121 practiced in Colorado following graduation and 57 remained in Mesa County.
