A Grand Junction solar energy company and outdoor advertising firm have erected the first — and so far, only — solar-powered billboard in Colorado.

Syndicated Solar and Colorado West Outdoor Advertising erected a tri-vision billboard that towers 40 feet over U.S. Highway 6 & 50 near the Rimrock Shopping Center. A 2.17-kilovolt photovoltaic solar array generates more than 90 percent of the electricity for the billboard.

Colorado West Outdoor Advertising qualified for an investment tax credit that covered 30 percent of the cost of the project, while a rebate from Xcel Energy covered about 40 percent of the project. The firm also is eligible for an accelerated depreciation schedule of five years on the adjusted asset value.

Established in 2009, Syndicated Solar offers solar energy projects for commercial, industrial and agricultural markets. The company assists its clients from concept to completion with an in-house team of engineers, installers, accountants and grant writers
