Symphony, art center get grants

Two Mesa County organizations are among the recipients of 180 grants promoting arts and cultural activities in Colorado.

The Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and Western Colorado Center for the Arts each received $8,500 grants through the Colorado Creates grant program.

Colorado Creative Industries announced that 180 grants worth a total of $1.3 million were awarded for the 2017 to 2018 fiscal year. Grants were awarded to recipients in 47 counties across Colorado, and nearly half the grant funds were awarded in areas outside the Denver area.

Colorado Creates is the largest grant program for Colorado Creative Industries and provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and government agencies that present cultural activities. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis and also serve as a kind of seal of approval that helps recipients obtain additional local and national funding.
