Winter funding met for North Avenue shelter

HomewardBound of the Grand Valley announced last week it reached its fundraising goal to keep its North Avenue emergency shelter open through the end of February, covering the coldest winter months.

In a statement shared on social media, the organization said community donations, along with support from the City of Grand Junction and the Mesa County Commission, allowed it to raise the funds needed to operate the North Avenue shelter through the end of February.

Campaign materials shared by the organization show $60,000 raised for January and another $60,000 raised for February, following earlier fundraising that supported operations in October, November and December.

In a Dec. 10, 2025, article, “City sending $185K in leftover funds to HomewardBound,” The Business Times reported the organization planned to shut down the North Avenue shelter and consolidate emergency shelter operations at its Pathways Family Shelter on 29 Road after it got through the winter and into March.

HomewardBound’s longer-term operations will shift toward the Pathways facility, which was designed as a service-rich shelter with expanded case management. The consolidation plan includes changes to shelter operations, including updated barriers to entry, clearer participation requirements and defined time limits for stays, with a greater emphasis on moving individuals toward stable housing outcomes.
