Yurt company among Green America award winners

Colorado Yurt Company in Montrose is among the latest winners of the Green Americas People & Planet Awards.

Green America, an organization providing resources to businesses and individuals addressing environmental and social problems, presented the quarterly awards to small businesses that promote
do-it-yourself products and services.

The other winners were Garden Towner Project, a business in Bloomington, Ind., that makes self-contained vertical garden systems, and the Real Milk Paint Co., a business in Hohenwald, Tenn., that makes nontoxic milk paints.

“The do-it-yourself concept is already important to consumers who wish to live greener, and these businesses take the concept to a new level,” said Fran Teplitz, executive co-director of Green America. “When we choose DIY products, particular ones that promote sustainability and minimize environmental impact, we benefit both people and the planet.”

Colorado Yurt Company makes yurts, tipis and tents that come in kits and use fewer natural resources than traditional structures.

“Our company will use the People & Planet Award to bring affordable, energy code-compliant yurts to our customers and encourage sustainability throughout our supply chain, such as through our partnership with the manufacturer of recycled denim insulation we provide with our yurts,” said Dan Kiger, president of Colorado Yurt Company. “The People & Planet Award generously supports Colorado Yurt’s mission to bring low-impact, leave-no-trace,
do-it-yourself structures to our customers.”
