Drought leads City of Grand Junction to ban sale of fireworks

Due to ongoing severe to extreme drought conditions and elevated wildfire risk, the Grand Junction City Council approved a resolution prohibiting the sale, exchange, barter or trade of consumer fireworks within the City of Grand Junction, along with the issuance of temporary permits for fireworks sales. The restrictions remain in effect until lifted by order of the fire chief.

The ban impacts consumer fireworks sales and permitting, but professionally managed fireworks displays at Lincoln Park Sports Complex are currently still scheduled to move forward, pending weather and fire conditions.

Currently scheduled professional displays include: June 5, hosted by the Razorback Suckers; June 19, hosted by the Razorback Suckers; and July 4, hosted by the City of Grand Junction. The July 4 city celebration will commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th anniversary.

All professional displays remain subject to changing fire conditions and direction from fire officials.
